These unfinished poplar bird houses are made at the Maine State Prison. A screw on the front releases a clean out door on the side of the house and a pre-drilled hole on the top allows for hanging with a nail or screw. Paint or decorate the exterior of the house yourself or leave it plain. The inside should remain unfinished for the fledglings sake. The opening in front is 1.5" across, which is the recommended opening for bluebirds, and would work for many others, as well. The prison work program enables some inmates to learn or refine a skill and earn a very modest compensation. This is a long-standing tradition in Maine, which serves as a model for other states.
